For most winter visitors, the best place to stay is Glencoe village or Ballachulish. That puts you a few minutes' drive from the glen, food, fuel and a shop, and the area has the widest choice of places that stay open from November to March. If you want to wake up beside the Buachaille or the ski slopes, move up to Kingshouse.

In short:
  • Best all-round bases: Glencoe village and Ballachulish, where the Clachaig Inn, Glencoe Inn, Isles of Glencoe Hotel and Glencoe House all trade through the winter. The Clachaig's rooms close from 13 to 27 December 2026.
  • Skiers and walkers heading east: Kingshouse Hotel (hotel and bunkhouse) or the micro-lodges at Glencoe Mountain Resort, both on Rannoch Moor at the head of the glen.
  • Book festive dates now: Kingshouse's Christmas packages start from £690pp and the Ballachulish Hotel's Christmas break is already fully booked for 2026. Outside the festive fortnight, winter is the cheapest time of year here.
Pоwered by GetYourGuide

No car, or no wish to drive Rannoch Moor in the dark? The calendar above is for Rabbie's 3-day Isle of Skye tour from Edinburgh (4.7/5 from 600+ reviews), sold on GetYourGuide with accommodation included. It stops in Glencoe on day one, although the nights are on Skye, not in the glen. If you are driving, every base below is within about 30 minutes of Glencoe village.

A Victorian country house among trees on the shore of a Highland loch, with hills behind
Lochside houses, historic inns and hot-tub lodges: most of Glencoe's winter beds are within 15 minutes of the glen.

Historic Inns

Clachaig Inn, Glencoe (old glen road)

This is the inn the glen is famous for. The Clachaig Inn is more than 300 years old, has been run by the Daynes family since 1984, and has 23 en suite rooms plus self-catering chalets. The Boots Bar, with its wood burner and cask ales, is the place to swap mountain stories, and in winter the inn runs a series of Winter Mountain Safety Lectures. Dogs are allowed in a limited number of rooms (one per room, £10 a night).

Winter 2026 closure: the Clachaig's own website says the hotel closes from Sunday 13 December 2026 to Sunday 27 December 2026, while the bars and kitchen “will remain open”. VisitScotland's listing gives a shorter closure (accommodation closed only on 24, 25 and 26 December, with the bars usually shut on Christmas Day), but the inn's own page is the most recent statement. Phone +44 1855 811252 before booking any December dates. The Hogmanay package is not affected (see below).

For sale, but trading: in February 2026 the Clachaig went on the market through Christie & Co with an asking price of £3.8m. It is trading as normal, but if you book far ahead, check your terms in case the ownership changes.

Kingshouse Hotel, head of Glen Coe

Kingshouse is an 18th-century drovers' inn that reopened in February 2019 after a major rebuild. It now has 57 bedrooms, a restaurant and the Way Inn bar in the original building, with a fireplace and walkers dripping by the door. The location is the draw: Buachaille Etive Mòr fills the windows, red deer wander the car park, and Glencoe Mountain Resort is just across the road. Selected rooms are dog-friendly (Signature Rooms are not). There are two EV charging stations with four plugs in total; bring your own cable, and they cannot be pre-booked.

The Kingshouse bunkhouse sleeps 2, 4 or 6 per room at £44 a bed, or £54 with breakfast. It has a drying room, laundry and a basic kitchen. Guests must be 18 or over to stay alone, and dogs are not allowed.

Hotels

Glencoe Inn, Glencoe village

Run by Crerar Hotels, the Glencoe Inn sits right in the village, looking towards Loch Leven. It has log fires, a whisky snug, The Dining Room and the Red Shed wood-fired pizza takeaway. It is dog-friendly and about 13 miles from the ski resort. The best-value winter deals are the Autumn & Winter Getaway (two nights' B&B, a dinner allowance and bubbles) and up to 30% off stays of two nights or more. One Expedia listing says the bar and dining venue close seasonally from late October to mid-March, so ask before booking whether The Dining Room is serving on your dates.

Isles of Glencoe Hotel, Ballachulish

Yes, it has a pool. The Isles of Glencoe Hotel is a 59-room lochside hotel with a heated indoor pool, sauna and spa pool, plus a conservatory restaurant and a bar with a wood-burning fire. It is the easiest family choice in the area, with bunk-bed family rooms and pet-friendly ground-floor rooms. Reviews are mixed on upkeep, but the leisure club makes up for a lot on a wet winter evening. Expedia lists a short seasonal pool closure (29 November–2 December), so check if you are visiting then.

Ballachulish Hotel, Ballachulish Bridge

The Ballachulish Hotel, a baronial building, has stood beside the bridge since 1877, with views over Loch Linnhe and food in the Bùlas Bar & Bistro. Recent reviews praise the views and breakfast, but some mention tired rooms, a full car park and coach groups at breakfast. In winter it can be good value: Expedia showed £129 for a mid-November night, about half the August rate.

Lochside alternatives: Onich and Kentallen

  • Holly Tree Hotel, Kentallen: a converted railway station on Loch Linnhe with an indoor heated pool, a hot tub, a seafood restaurant, and lodges with their own hot tubs. Dogs are welcome for a fee.
  • The Onich Hotel, Onich: gardens run down to the loch, and there are beach pods and a hot tub. Reviews split between “amazing view” and “needs updating”, and prices are often the lowest in the area.

Luxury

Glencoe House, Glencoe village

Lord Strathcona's 1895 mansion reopened as Glencoe House hotel in 2012 and sits in 10 acres of grounds. It has 11 large suites, some with in-suite dining and some with hot tubs, plus six Strathcona Lodges with private hot tubs on walled decks (two-night minimum). Booking direct, it offers three nights for the price of two from November to March, the best luxury deal in the glen. It hosts guests over Christmas and Hogmanay, but dinner is charged on top of the room rate. We could not find published winter closure dates, so confirm your dates when you book.

Cabins and Self-Catering

Self-catering makes the most sense in winter: a hot tub, a wood burner, and no need to drive out for dinner on an icy night.

  • RiverBeds & SeaBeds (Woodlands Glencoe, Ballachulish): RiverBeds are dog-friendly wee lodges for two above the river; SeaBeds are lookout lodges with infinity hot tubs and loch views. Both have private hot tubs, and RiverBeds guests get free use of the Isles of Glencoe pool.
  • The Heronry, Ballachulish: a woodland hideaway for up to four, with a wood-burning stove, a balcony hot tub and ski storage.
  • Glencoe Hideaways, Lettermore: couples-only lochside retreats on Loch Linnhe; Little Fox Lodge has a hot tub.
  • Island View House (Glencoe Inn): sleeps 10, with a private hot tub all year. Good for groups; book it through the Glencoe Inn or search Glencoe holiday homes for your dates.
  • Clachaig Holidays: chalets and cottages at the inn and around Glencoe and Ballachulish, booked with the Clachaig.

Budget: Hostels, Cabins and Camping

  • Glencoe Youth Hostel (SYHA): a 10-minute walk from the Clachaig, with private rooms, a self-catering kitchen and one of the Highlands' best drying rooms. Winter hours: from November to February it opens Thursday to Monday only (closed Tuesday and Wednesday), and it is closed to guests daily from 10:00 to 16:00. Dogs can stay in private rooms for £7.50 a night.
  • Glencoe Mountain Resort micro-lodges: insulated “hobbit house” pods for four, or “microlodge plus” for six, at the ski area. Bring a sleeping bag or hire bedding (£5pp). Electric hook-ups cost £20 a night, and there are drying rooms and a café-bar. Open all year; book through the resort or search stays near the ski area. Skiing or sledging? See our Glencoe Mountain Resort winter guide.
  • MacDonald Hotel & Cabins, Kinlochleven: simple en suite rooms plus heated all-season cabins sleeping four, a drying room and a bar. Dogs are welcome. It has been advertised as open all year, but its tent camping is seasonal.
  • Red Squirrel Campsite: wild-feeling woodland pitches on the River Coe, campfires allowed, dogs welcome, and a short walk to the Clachaig. It is listed as open all year in 2026 and 2027. The campsite's own FAQ charges £15 per adult per night and £3 per child aged 16 or under, so £30 a night for two adults, and it has no electric hook-ups.
  • Invercoe Caravan & Camping Park: lochside, with holiday homes and pods. Open all year; you only need to book ahead for Christmas, New Year (minimum three nights) and February half-term.

We have not listed Blackwater Hostel in Kinlochleven as a winter option, because its 2026 season listings end in October. Check with the hostel directly for winter openings.

Fort William Alternatives

Fort William has the biggest choice and the train station, but it is roughly 30 minutes from Glencoe village and nearer an hour from the ski area. It makes sense if you are also doing Ben Nevis or Nevis Range, or you want supermarkets and restaurants on your doorstep.

Glencoe or Fort William? If Glencoe is the point of your trip, stay in Glencoe. According to sunrise-sunset.org, Fort William gets just 6 hours 45 minutes of daylight on the winter solstice (21 December 2026), and you do not want to spend an hour of it on the A82. Pick Fort William only if you are splitting your time between the two areas (see driving the A82 in winter).

What to Look For in Winter

  • Flexible cancellation: winter storms close roads, including the snow gates on the A82 over Rannoch Moor. Choose free-cancellation rates where you can.
  • Parking and road access: places on or just off the A82 are easiest after snow.
  • Drying room: essential for walkers. The SYHA, the Kingshouse bunkhouse, the MacDonald cabins and the ski resort all have one.
  • A fire or a pool: the Clachaig, Kingshouse and the Glencoe Inn have fires; the Isles of Glencoe and the Holly Tree have pools.
  • Food on site or within walking distance: village restaurants keep shorter winter hours, so check restaurant days before you book. See what is open in Glencoe in winter.

How Many Nights Do You Need?

Stay two nights minimum, and three is better. Winter weather often wipes out a day, and a third night gives you a spare. Skiers and winter climbers should plan for 3–5 nights. Our 3-day Glencoe winter itinerary shows how two nights work in practice, and our Scotland itinerary planner helps you fit the nights around the rest of your trip.

Prices and When to Book

Winter is low season apart from Christmas, New Year and February half-term, and price-comparison sites name November, January and February as the cheapest months. Some real examples:

  • The Ballachulish Hotel at £129 for a November night, against about double in summer.
  • The “Save up to 40% this winter” deals on 1, 2 or 3 nights advertised on clachaig.com (check which nights qualify).
  • Glencoe House's three nights for the price of two, November to March.
  • The Glencoe Inn's up to 30% off stays of two nights or more.

Book weekends and ski-season dates 4–8 weeks ahead, and festive dates now. Lodges often have two-night minimums.

Christmas and Hogmanay 2026

  • Kingshouse: Christmas, 24–27 December, three nights from £690pp with all meals. Hogmanay, 30 December–2 January, from £815pp including the Gala Dinner. Bookings made after 30 October 2026 are fully prepaid and non-refundable, and dogs are not accepted over the festive period.
  • Clachaig Inn: a Hogmanay package of two nights from 31 December, with prices frozen at last year's level. It costs £680 per room (Classic) or £700 (Glencoe View) and includes Prosecco and a Clachaig miniature on arrival, a three-course dinner each evening in the Ossian Lounge, breakfast and live music. There is a non-refundable first-night deposit, full payment is due by 5 December, and single occupancy of twins or doubles, under-18s and family rooms are not available.
  • Ballachulish Hotel: Christmas is fully booked. Hogmanay runs 31 December–2 January, from £358pp with all meals.
  • Isles of Glencoe: Christmas, three nights from £480pp; Hogmanay, two nights from £398pp.
  • Glencoe House: open, with in-suite festive dining charged extra.
