Last updated — climate figures from Met Office 1991–2020 averages; opening hours, road closures and sunrise times checked for November 2026.

Glencoe is worth visiting in November, as long as you plan around wet weather and short days. You get about 7 to 9 hours of daylight and rain on most days. In return the glen is quiet, the light is dramatic, snow may already be on the summits, and the main visitor centre, pubs and hotels stay open. If you need guaranteed sunshine, or you want to climb mountains without winter skills, pick another month.

The calendar above is for the most-booked Glencoe day tour from Edinburgh, which runs right through the winter. Below are the Met Office climate figures, exact November 2026 sunrise and sunset times, how the A82 behaves in winter, what is open, and the best things to do at low level.

Pros and Cons of Glencoe in November

Pros Cons
Few crowds and easy parking at viewpoints that are packed in summer Rain on roughly two out of every three days
Low-angled light and possible snow-capped peaks, which make great photos Daylight drops from about 9 hours to just over 7 hours across the month
Glencoe Visitor Centre open daily (shorter winter hours) Glencoe Folk Museum closed for redevelopment
Pubs with real fires at the Clachaig and the Kingshouse Ski season usually not yet started
Off-season accommodation deals High-level hiking can need winter skills and kit
No midges Driving the A82 in the dark and rain is tiring
Our verdict: go in November for a moody Highland road trip, short walks, history and evenings by the fire. Don't go expecting long hiking days or skiing.

Glencoe Weather in November: The Real Numbers

There is no official Met Office climate station in Glencoe itself, so the most useful comparison is with the two nearest Met Office stations, using their 1991–2020 averages:

November average Tulloch Bridge (inland Lochaber, 237 m) Dunstaffnage (coast near Oban)
Average daily maximum 8.0°C 10.0°C
Average nightly minimum 2.2°C 5.0°C
Rainfall 203 mm 178 mm
Days with 1 mm of rain or more about 20 about 20
Days of air frost about 9 about 3
Sunshine not recorded about 46 hours for the month

Met Office 1991–2020 station averages.

What this means for your trip:

  • Glencoe village sits between these two stations. It is at sea level on Loch Leven, so it is closer to the milder coastal figures. Rannoch Moor and the Glencoe Mountain Resort area sit 300 m or more above sea level and feel more like Tulloch Bridge, or colder.
  • Expect daytime highs of around 6–10°C in the glen, with frost likely on clear nights, especially higher up.
  • Rain is the norm, not the exception. Around 20 wet days a month means you will probably get some dry spells every day, but rarely a fully dry week.
  • Snow: on the glen floor, snow in November is possible but usually short-lived. The summits (Bidean nam Bian, Buachaille Etive Mòr, the Aonach Eagach) often get their first snow of the season in November, and it comes and goes with mild, wet spells. The Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) says it will restart its Glencoe forecasts “in November or December 2026 depending on conditions”, so full winter conditions are usually only just arriving.
  • Wind is often a bigger issue than cold. Exposed spots like Rannoch Moor can feel far colder than the thermometer suggests.

Packing for this mix of rain, wind and cold is half the battle. Our Highlands packing list covers the layers and waterproofs.

Other Experiences You Might Enjoy

If you would rather not drive the A82 in November rain, guided days out still reach the glen all winter: Glencoe and Rannoch Moor on a day tour from Edinburgh or Glasgow, a Loch Ness cruise to Urquhart Castle, or the coast road past Oban and Castle Stalker. Tours from Fort William and Inverness add Glenfinnan and the Great Glen. The suggestions below are matched automatically to these Scottish Highlands destinations and experiences.

Daylight in Glencoe in November 2026

UK clocks go back on Sunday 25 October 2026, so all of November is on GMT. Sunrise and sunset in Glencoe:

Date Sunrise Sunset Approx. daylight
Sun 1 November 2026 07:29 16:37 9 h 08 m
Sun 15 November 2026 08:00 16:09 8 h 09 m
Mon 30 November 2026 08:29 15:48 7 h 19 m

By late November it is properly dark before 4.30pm. Start walks by 9–10am, aim to be back at the car by 3pm, and always carry a head torch. Usable light starts around 30–40 minutes before sunrise and lasts about the same after sunset. The low sun gives long, golden light for much of the day, which suits photographers.

Will the A82 Be Open? Driving to Glencoe in November

The A82 is the only main road through Glencoe. It is a well-maintained trunk road that is gritted and ploughed in winter, and it is open the vast majority of the time in November. Before you set off, check these:

  • Snow gates. Traffic Scotland lists snow gates on the A82 at Glencoe, Tyndrum and Bridge of Orchy, which together bracket the high crossing of Rannoch Moor. In severe snow they can close the road so drivers are not stranded on the moor. Closures are more common from December to March than in November, but they can happen.
  • How to check: look at Traffic Scotland's live snow gate status and incident map (traffic.gov.scot) before you set off, plus the Met Office forecast for the area. Overnight roadworks closures also happen on this road, sometimes with timed “amnesty” convoys, so check for those too.
  • Darkness and rain. In November you will often drive part of the route in the dark. Expect spray from lorries, standing water, and sharp bends along Loch Lomond further south.
  • Deer on the road. Red deer are often near the road on Rannoch Moor and around the Kingshouse, especially around dawn and dusk. Slow down and watch the verges.
  • Fuel and phone signal. Fill up before you leave Tyndrum, Crianlarich or Fort William, and download offline maps, because mobile coverage on the moor is patchy.

If driving on the left in the dark and wet is not for you, a tour or the bus is a perfectly good alternative (see below). Snow gates, this winter's roadworks, fuel stops and hire-car advice are all in our guide to driving the A82 to Glencoe in winter.

What Is Open in Glencoe in November?

November is quieter, but Glencoe does not shut down. Here is the picture for 2026:

  • Glencoe Visitor Centre (National Trust for Scotland): open daily 09:30–16:00 from 26 October to 23 December 2026, then closed 24–26 December and 31 December–1 January. The Highland Coo Café is also open 09:30–16:00. Entry is free. Parking is £4 per car (free for NTS members). The NTS site gives two different figures for motorhomes (£4 and £6), and large motorhomes and cars towing caravans cannot be accommodated.
  • Glencoe Folk Museum: closed. The museum's own site says it is “currently CLOSED for Redevelopment work” and “will reopen in 2027 with new opening hours and admission fees”. Groundworks on the £3 million project began in July 2026. £2.8 million has been raised so far, including money from The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic Environment Scotland, and project director David Rounce says the museum hopes to reopen “by Easter next year”.
  • Clachaig Inn: open through November and well known for its walkers' bar and food. Its winter closures page (updated 21 September 2026) says the hotel will close “from on Sunday 13th December 2026 — Sunday 27th 2026” and that the bars and kitchen “will remain open… serving food and drink as usual”. The wording is garbled, so check the exact dates with the inn. It advertises winter offers of up to 40% off.
  • Kingshouse Hotel: open year-round, with its restaurant, bar and the walkers' Way Inn, and great views of Buachaille Etive Mòr.
  • Glencoe Mountain Resort: the base area, the White Corries café and on-site accommodation (micro-lodges and campervan hook-ups) normally stay open. The Access Chairlift usually closes in autumn for annual maintenance, typically reopening in late November or early December depending on weather. In low season the café has typically opened 8am–4pm.
  • Village shops, cafés and B&Bs: some small, seasonal businesses close or cut their hours in November. Check before you travel instead of relying on summer listings.

Can You Ski or See Snow in Glencoe in November?

Seeing snow: quite possibly, at least on the tops. On a clear day after a cold snap, snow-dusted peaks above a brown-and-gold glen are one of the classic November views.

Skiing: very unlikely. Third-party ski guides list Glencoe Mountain's planned 2026–27 season as 19 December 2026 to 11 April 2027, but in Scotland the season “starts when the snow arrives”, as the resort puts it. Lifts only open when there is enough cover, and tickets are released just 3–4 days ahead once conditions are confirmed. Watch the resort's snow report and webcams.

Can You Hike in Glencoe in November Without Crampons?

Yes at low level. No on the big mountains when there is snow or ice up high.

  • Mountaineering Scotland's advice is that once winter conditions arrive, you should carry an ice axe and crampons and know how to use them. Ross Cadie, its Mountain Safety Advisor, warns that “the misconception that micro spikes and crampons are interchangeable can put people at serious risk in the mountains in winter”. Its guidance says crampons are essential on steeper, more technical terrain where a slip could have serious consequences.
  • In November conditions change from day to day. A summit might be bare rock one week and icy the next. Check the Mountain Weather Information Service (MWIS) for the West Highlands and, once it is running, the SAIS Glencoe avalanche forecast.
  • If you don't have winter skills, stick to the low-level walks below or hire a qualified mountain guide.

Best Things to Do in Glencoe in November

  1. Glencoe Lochan: easy waymarked woodland trails around a still lochan above the village, with tall conifers and mountain reflections. Forestry and Land Scotland parking costs £1 for up to an hour or £3 all day (card or RingGo).
  2. Glencoe Visitor Centre and the 1692 Massacre: the exhibition, films and 3D map explain the Massacre of Glencoe, climbing history and the landscape. It is a good rainy-day stop with a café.
  3. Signal Rock (An Torr) woodland walk: a short walk near the visitor centre to the spot traditionally linked with the massacre story. Paths can be muddy, so wear boots.
  4. Three Sisters viewpoint: the classic roadside view of the three ridges from the A82 lay-by. It is free, takes minutes, and is spectacular in moody weather. Take care crossing the road.
  5. Buachaille Etive Mòr from the Kingshouse or the Glen Etive junction: the “Great Herdsman” is one of Scotland's most photographed mountains. You don't need to climb it; the view is the point.
  6. Glen Etive: a single-track road through a remote, wild glen. Drive it slowly, use passing places, and leave before dark.
  7. Waterfalls after rain: November rain turns the glen's burns and falls, including the falls of the River Coe near the Three Sisters, into roaring torrents.
  8. Pub evenings: a fire, a dram and live music at the Clachaig are part of a November visit.

Where to Stay in Glencoe in November

  • Glencoe village and Ballachulish: the most practical base, with the Lochan, visitor centre, pubs and shops close by. Good for walkers.
  • Kingshouse and the Rannoch Moor end: the most dramatic setting, with Buachaille views and deer outside. It is remote, so expect evenings in the hotel.
  • Glencoe Mountain Resort micro-lodges: a budget option with character at the top of the glen.
  • Fort William (about 20 miles north): the most choice of hotels, restaurants and supermarkets, and a good base for combining Glencoe with Ben Nevis and the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

On price: November is off-season, and rates are generally lower and easier to get than in summer. For example, the Clachaig advertises winter deals of up to 40% off. We haven't quoted specific room prices because they change daily, so compare live rates for your dates.

Practical Tips for Glencoe in November

  • Plan the day around the light. Do your main activity between 9am and 3pm.
  • Have a rainy-day plan: the visitor centre, a long café lunch, or a drive to Fort William.
  • Dress in layers and bring waterproofs, gloves, a hat and waterproof boots. Paths are often wet even on dry days.
  • Carry a head torch, even on short walks.
  • Check three things each morning: the Met Office or MWIS forecast, Traffic Scotland, and opening hours.
  • Book dinner at popular spots at weekends; with fewer places open, tables fill up.
  • St Andrew's Day (30 November) is Scotland's national day. We couldn't confirm any specific Glencoe events for November 2026, so check local listings.
  • Northern lights: auroras are occasionally seen in the Highlands on clear nights, and Glencoe has dark skies. November cloud cover makes a sighting a bonus, not something to plan around.

Is Glencoe Worth It in November?

Yes. Glencoe in November is wilder and emptier than in summer, and for many people more memorable, as long as you accept the rain and short days and keep your plans at low level unless you have winter skills. Base yourself in the glen or Fort William, check the A82 and the forecast each morning, and leave space in your plans for the weather.
