Last updated . Opening hours, roadworks and timetables are from the National Trust for Scotland, Traffic Scotland, ScotRail and the venues' own sites, checked in October 2026; sun times are for Fort William from sunrise-sunset.org. Three days is enough to see Glencoe, Fort William and Glenfinnan properly in winter, as long as you plan every day around about seven hours of usable light. Drive north from Glasgow on day 1, spend all of day 2 in Glencoe, and on day 3 go to Glenfinnan and back across Rannoch Moor before it gets dark.
- Book two nights in Glencoe or Ballachulish, so both mornings start close to the glen.
- Time your Glenfinnan visit for an ordinary ScotRail train crossing the viaduct, because the Jacobite steam train doesn't run in winter.
- Check the A82 roadworks the night before each drive. Overnight closures at Kingshouse start on 6 December 2026, so don't plan to cross Rannoch Moor after 19:00.
Short of time or not driving? The calendar above is for the From Glasgow: Glenfinnan, Loch Lomond & The Highlands day tour (from $74, 4.8/5 from 149 reviews on GetYourGuide). It covers the same road as days 1 and 3 of this trip, Loch Lomond, Glen Coe and the Glenfinnan Viaduct, in one guided day from Glasgow.
Glencoe Winter Itinerary at a Glance
| Day | Route | Driving time (no stops, dry roads) | Highlights | Overnight |

Edinburgh variant: take the M9 to Stirling, then the A84 through Callander and the A85 over Glen Ogle to join the A82 at Crianlarich. That's about 115 miles and around 2.5–3 hours to Glencoe. Leave 30–45 minutes earlier than the Glasgow timings below, and skip Luss.
Daylight: Plan Around These Times
Sunrise and sunset in Fort William (GMT, flat horizon):
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset |
|---|---|---|
| 25 Nov 2026 | 08:21 | 15:53 |
| 15 Dec 2026 | 08:51 | 15:40 |

In deep glens the sun drops behind the ridges well before the official sunset. The timings below are set for December, the darkest month. In late February you can push each afternoon stop about 90 minutes later.
Other Experiences You Might Enjoy
If you'd rather let someone else drive part of the way, guided day trips from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness cover Loch Lomond, Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, Fort William and the Glenfinnan Viaduct, and multi-day tours add the Isle of Skye and Loch Ness. The suggestions below are matched automatically to these Scottish Highlands destinations and experiences.
Day 1: Glasgow to Glencoe over Rannoch Moor
- 08:00 Leave Glasgow on the A82. In December it will still be dark until you reach Loch Lomond.
- 08:45 Luss. Walk out on the pier while it gets light over the loch.
- 09:30 Inveruglas viewpoint, across the loch towards the Arrochar Alps.
- 10:30 Green Welly Stop, Tyndrum. Get coffee, use the toilets, and fill the tank. The Green Welly has its own filling station, and there's no fuel on Rannoch Moor. Published opening hours for its shops, restaurant and pumps differ between sources, so check its own website for winter times.
- 11:30 Bridge of Orchy and Loch Tulla. Stop briefly at the lay-by above the loch.
- 12:00 Lochan na h-Achlaise on Rannoch Moor. This is the classic frozen-moor view. Use proper lay-bys only, never passing places.
- 12:45 Lunch at the White Corries café at Glencoe Mountain Resort, or the walker-friendly Way Inn at the Kingshouse.
- 13:45 Altnafeadh for the Buachaille Etive Mòr. The River Coupall falls are a short walk from the Glen Etive road, just west of Kingshouse.
- 14:45 Three Sisters viewpoint in the last of the good light.
- 15:30 Check in. In December it's dark by about 15:40.
Wet-weather Plan B: spend longer over lunch at the Kingshouse and drive the moor slowly from the car. Most of the classic views can be seen from lay-bys.
If it snows: check Traffic Scotland before you leave. Leave more room between you and gritters, and skip the lay-by stops on the moor if they haven't been cleared. Our A82 winter driving guide explains how to decide whether to go.
Roadworks: from 6 December 2026 at 19:00, Traffic Scotland lists an A82 road closure with hourly amnesties at Kingshouse (Highland Boundary to White Corries) for structural repairs, with no diversion. These are overnight works, so a daytime crossing isn't affected, but don't plan to cross Rannoch Moor after 19:00. Convoy and traffic-light works are also listed at Crianlarich from mid-November and early December, and there's convoy resurfacing at Auch, south of Bridge of Orchy, from 26 November (listed with a 07:00 start).
Day 2: Spend the Whole Day in Glencoe
- 08:30 Walk to Glencoe Lochan for sunrise (about 08:50 in December). It's an easy loop, and on a still morning the mountains reflect in the water. See easy winter walks.
- 09:30 The NTS Glencoe Visitor Centre opens. Visit the exhibition, the turf house and the ranger desk to ask about conditions. Parking costs £4, and members park free.
- 10:30 Walk to Signal Rock through the woods, or follow the Glencoe Greenway towards the village.
- 12:00 Lunch at the Highland Coo Café at the visitor centre (open until 16:00) or at the Clachaig Inn.
- 13:00 Drive Glen Etive. It's a dead-end single-track road of about 11.5–12 miles from the A82 near the Kingshouse, with the Skyfall viewpoint about halfway. According to a Highland Council news release of 14 May 2026, the Lochaber Area Committee approved pay-and-display charges at Glen Etive Road End on 11 May 2026 and hoped they would begin in June or July 2026. The order also bans overnight parking from 22:00 to 08:00, so carry a card and check the signs for the tariff. Use passing places only for passing.
- 15:15 For last light, choose Loch Achtriochtan for calm reflections or the Buachaille from the Glen Etive junction. Our winter photography guide has compositions for each.
- 18:30 Pub dinner at the Clachaig Inn (Boots Bar) or the Kingshouse (the Climbers Bar is open to non-residents; book ahead).
Alternatives:
- The Lost Valley (Coire Gabhail): go only on a clear, dry, ice-free day. It involves a river crossing and rocky steps, and when the path is icy, don't do it.
- Glencoe Mountain chairlift and sledging: the resort says the Access Chair runs all year, weather permitting, opening at 9am; check the daily snow report for the last uplift, which was 4.15pm on 1 November 2026. Sledging usually runs from about mid-December, using free sledges on the plateau, but you need a return chairlift ticket (£20 for adults on the 2026–27 price list). See our Glencoe Mountain Resort guide.
- Grey Mare's Tail, Kinlochleven: a short woodland walk to a waterfall that is at its best after heavy rain.
Wet-weather Plan B: spend longer at the visitor centre, have a long lunch at the Clachaig, then walk to the Grey Mare's Tail. Don't count on indoor options nearby: the Glencoe Folk Museum is closed for redevelopment until 2027, and the Ice Factor in Kinlochleven has been closed since 2023.
If it snows: Glen Etive isn't gritted the way the A82 is, so leave it out. Stay low on the Lochan, Signal Rock and Greenway paths, which are lovely in snow. If the chairlift is running, sledging becomes the main event.
Day 3: Glenfinnan, Fort William and Home Before Dark
- 08:15 Check out and drive to Fort William (about 30 minutes), then continue west on the A830 to Glenfinnan.
- 09:30 Glenfinnan Monument and NTS visitor centre (open 09:30–16:00 in winter; car park £5). On weekdays in the run-up to Christmas this is the quiet season, and you may have Loch Shiel almost to yourself.
- 10:30 Walk up to the viaduct viewpoint above the visitor centre. The path is steep and muddy, and can be icy.
- About 11:00 Watch a ScotRail train cross the viaduct. The eastbound service leaves Glenfinnan station at 11:01 Monday–Saturday (11:00 on Sunday) and crosses within a few minutes. If you can wait, the westbound train leaves Glenfinnan at 12:51 on weekdays, 12:47 on Saturdays and 12:46 on Sundays, and crosses just before it arrives. These times come from the timetable valid until 12 December 2026, so check the winter timetable before you go.
- 12:15 Back to Fort William for lunch on the High Street. The West Highland Museum (Monday–Saturday 10:00–16:00, free) is good for Jacobite history.
- 13:15 Glen Nevis Lower Falls, a short drive up the glen road.
- 14:00 at the latest Start driving south. In December you want to be crossing Rannoch Moor by about 15:00 and reaching Glasgow around 17:00.
Is the Nevis Gorge walk to Steall Falls a good idea in winter? The path is rocky and narrow, with streams to cross and steep drops beside it. In wet weather it gets slippery, and in frost it becomes dangerous. Do it only on a dry, frost-free day, and only if you swap it for Glenfinnan, because the round trip takes 2–3 hours. Don't cross the wire bridge in winter. In the same May 2026 decision, Highland Council's Lochaber Area Committee approved parking charges at the Glen Nevis Road End, along with a ban on overnight parking from 22:00 to 08:00; we couldn't confirm when charging starts, so check the signs there too.
Wet-weather Plan B: book a whisky tour at the Ben Nevis Distillery, then visit the West Highland Museum.
If it snows: the A830 to Glenfinnan and the A82 home are priority gritting routes, but snow on Rannoch Moor is what should decide your timing. If there's a warning, skip Glenfinnan and head south by late morning.
Day 3 alternatives:
- Ben Nevis Distillery: tours must be booked in advance. We couldn't confirm its winter hours, so check with the distillery before you go.
- Nevis Range gondola: it currently runs from 09:30 with the last gondola down at 16:00 in early winter, weather permitting. In January 2026 the whole site closed for emergency gearbox repairs, so check the Mountain Report on the day.
- Coast road home: return via Ballachulish and the A828 past Castle Stalker to Oban, then take the A85 back to the A82. It adds roughly an hour, so leave by 12:30 in December.
Where to Stay (2 Nights)
Base yourself in Glencoe village or Ballachulish so both of your mornings start close to the glen. Our where-to-stay guide compares the options in detail.
- Clachaig Inn, Glencoe: a climbers' inn with real ales and food all day. The hotel is closed 13–27 December 2026, and it offers a Hogmanay package from 31 December.
- Kingshouse Hotel: on the edge of Rannoch Moor facing the Buachaille, so it's ideal for sunrise on the moor, but it's about 20 minutes from Glencoe village.
- Isles of Glencoe Hotel, Ballachulish: on the loch shore, and the location of the nearest public EV charger to the NTS visitor centre.
To compare everything else, browse hotels and B&Bs in Glencoe and in Ballachulish, or hotels in Fort William if you'd rather spend night 2 closer to Glenfinnan.
Extensions
- Isle of Skye (+2 days): from Fort William, take the A82/A87 to the Skye Bridge, or use the Mallaig ferry if it's running. Skye's daylight is just as short, so build in one slow day.
- Loch Ness (+1 day): take the A82 north from Fort William through Fort Augustus. Check Traffic Scotland first: rock-slope works near Grotaig are listed until 24 December 2026. From Dochgarroch near Inverness, the Loch Ness and Caledonian Canal 2-hour cruise (from $40, 4.7/5 from more than 2,300 reviews) sails through the winter on reduced departures.
The No-Car Version
- Coach: on weekdays, Scottish Citylink's 915/916 timetable (as listed on bustimes.org) shows 8 northbound departures from Glencoe at 09:12, 10:29, 11:29, 13:04, 16:37, 18:02, 19:02 and 20:57, each reaching Fort William about 25–30 minutes later. The journey from Glasgow to Fort William takes about 3 hours. Timetables change through the winter, so check Citylink's own site before you travel.
- Train: the West Highland Line runs from Glasgow to Fort William, and Mallaig trains cross the Glenfinnan Viaduct. From 9 to 17 November 2026, buses replace trains between Crianlarich and Fort William/Mallaig, and Rannoch and Corrour won't be served at all.
- Tours: Glencoe has almost no local buses in winter, so a tour is the easiest way to see the glen and Glenfinnan. The Glenfinnan, Loch Lomond & Highlands day tour from Glasgow covers both in a day. To keep the three-day shape without driving, the 3-Day Isle of Skye and The Highlands Tour from Edinburgh (from $244, 4.8/5 from more than 3,000 reviews) swaps day 2 in Glencoe for Skye and Inverness. Compare the day options in our Glencoe day tours guide.
Christmas and New Year
- The NTS visitor centres at both Glencoe and Glenfinnan are closed 24–26 December and 31 December–1 January. They're open 27–30 December and from 2 January.
- The Clachaig's bars are usually closed on Christmas Day.
- ScotRail and Citylink run reduced services on public holidays, and many restaurants only take festive bookings.
- Our advice: 27–30 December is the best festive window, because attractions are open and sledging may be running. If you want Hogmanay in a Highland pub, book a package; don't just turn up.
For every festive closure in the glen, see is Glencoe open in winter?
Budget: What We Could Verify
- Parking: £4 at the Glencoe Visitor Centre and £5 at Glenfinnan (free for NTS members). Pay-and-display charges have been approved for the Glen Etive and Glen Nevis Road Ends.
- Glencoe Mountain return chairlift: £20 adult.
- Free entry: Glencoe Visitor Centre, Glenfinnan Visitor Centre and the West Highland Museum.
We haven't given figures for car hire, fuel, hotels or dinner, because winter prices change too much to quote reliably. Compare current rates when you book.
Packing
You'll need waterproofs, insulated layers, microspikes for icy paths, a head torch for the dark afternoons, and a car kit with a scraper, blanket and phone charger. Our winter packing list has the full checklist.
